The Institute of English Language Studies (IELS) recently organised an intensive training programme in enhanced management techniques for its senior management. The programme, which was held at the school's in-house training centre in Sliema, was developed and conducted by Ms Marika Fsadni, managing associate of M. Fsadni & Associates.
The training programme, run over nine weekly sessions, aimed to train participants in essential skills and modern management techniques.
The customised programme focused on how new management techniques may be applied to enhance the institute's strategy which must be matched to its dynamic and highly competitive environment and its resources and competitive capabilities.
As part of the training, the participants were asked to address a number of management issues and present a paper on how these techniques may be applied effectively to improve the school's strategic direction and operations.
IELS is the winner of last year's Academic & Professional Category of the Skâl Malta Tourism Awards 2003. "Achieving this award is an important milestone for IELS," IELS 1st name general manger Mr Dimech claims.
"This award is our Institute's very first international achievement. However it has now set new targets and challenges for the school to attain even higher excellence standards this year. And to achieve such standards, one has to keep abreast with today's modern management standards and requirements, and invest heavily in human resources training."
Last October, Dietmar Gunz, who had set up Frosch Touristik International GmbH (FTI) as a Malta tour operator in the mid-Eighties, bought it back from My Travel plc (a top British operator) after having sold it to them in the late Nineties.
This augurs better prospects for IELS on the German market in 2004. FTI is a shareholder of IELS through it subsidiary Frosch Touristik Malta Ltd together with Festa Ltd, part of the Mizzi Organisation.
Air-conditioning units were installed throughout the Sliema school premises last year and this was an essential investment that will enhance IELS' overall product. IELS is now looking at the possibility of refurbishing the ground floor area later this year.
