St Patrick's Day celebration

Hilton Malta in collaboration with Air Malta and Aer Lingus will be celebrating St Patrick's Day at the Oceana Restaurant on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The event will include traditional specialities and entertainment by Aer Lingus Musical Society.

The society is an Irish group made up entirely of airline team members who work throughout all areas of the Aer Lingus' network. It consists of Irish harpists, dancers, singers and musicians performing modern and traditional Irish music.

St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.

But for all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. In modern-day Ireland, St Patrick's Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17, St Patrick's Day.

Beginning in 1955, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use St Patrick's Day as an opportunity to promote tourism and showcase Ireland to the rest of the world.
