Around 400 delegates, half of them foreign, are expected to attend the Fifth European Regional Commonwealth Conference being held in Malta at the end of this month by the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses.
There will be 100 presentations over the 20 hours of the conference, being held at the Hilton between March 25 and 27, MUMN president Rudolph Cini said yesterday. There will also be a symposium aimed at student nurses.
The topics range from nursing specialisations to management and administrative issues.
The Commonwealth Nurses Federation organises these regional conferences every two years to promote standards of professional practice, with the theme this year being A Commonwealth Of Nations - The Commonwealth For Nurses Across Borders. Malta, Cyprus and the UK form one region out of the total of six.
Speaking about nurses' job mobility, Mr Cini said that many nurses in Malta were contractually bound and would therefore find it hard to take up jobs overseas while their EU counterparts would find communication an obstacle in many nursing fields.
The conference is being sponsored by the Foundation for Medical Services among others.
