The Ministry for Gozo has embarked on a modernisation programme of wards at Gozo General Hospital.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono announced plans to upgrade the gynaecology unit to provide room for an additional eight beds when she recently visited the hospital.

Mrs Debono said the project, which included the maternity ward, was necessitated by the fact that patients who required gynaecological interventions needed to stay in hospital for some days ranging from one to one week.

Last year, 227 such cases were treated at the hospital.

Other modernisation works are planned for the emergency and out-patients department and other wards.
