Barbie in Swan Lake

The world-famous Barbie doll

The world-famous Barbie doll

The world-famous doll Barbie will feature in Olivia Dow's production of Swan Lake.

The announcement was enthusiastically received by pupils of the Olivia Dow School of Russian Ballet and their parents, especially the very young, who shouted with excitement "Miss Olivia is Barbie's ballet teacher!". Others were overjoyed since Barbie is their favourite doll.

John Baldacchino, Ms Dow's husband, applied for permission to produce this live ballet with Barbie as the prima ballerina and star of the show. Mattel Inc. of the US, through their local representatives and sole distributors of Barbie, Tradeways Ltd, granted permission to the delight of both Ms Dow and Mr Baldacchino. They know the theme will be a big challenge for them and their pupils and that, as always, the production can be professionally produced on a grand scale.

"Barbie offers so much scope for such a show," said Ms Dow, who is probably more excited than the girls at having this great opportunity to present the famous Barbie in one of her productions - obviously in Barbie style!

The show, which warrants a big stage, will be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, in Valletta on July 31.

Russian male dancers are being invited for various leading parts, together with one or two well-known Maltese actors.
