An 18-year-old man from Mellieha was seriously injured yesterday when he fell a height of one storey at the hotel in Mellieha where he works, the police said.

The accident occurred when a lift at the hotel broke down and the worker levered open the door and fell into the lift shaft as he wrongly thought he would find the lift at that floor, which was not the case.

The Health and Safety Unit was informed of the accident. Duty magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima conducted an inquiry and appointed experts to assist her.

Qawra district police are investigating.
