The Labour Party parliamentary group met yesterday to discuss the election of the new President for Malta, in view of the end of the term of President Guido de Marco next month.
In a statement the MLP's parliamentary group said it agreed that the person occupying the country's top post had the role to unite the people.
It also believed that each Maltese citizen who contributed to the country should have the opportunity to become President.
Therefore, the group said, before the final choice of a new President was made, there should be wide discussion with the social and political forces in the country so that there would be an agreement on a suitable person who would have the support of the whole people.
The MLP group said it would be suggesting persons for this post in the coming days.
