The police are holding three people after two petty thefts were thwarted in Valletta yesterday.

At about noon, a German tourist browsing in a shop in Republic Street realised that someone was fiddling with his bag. He raised the alarm and police on the beat nearby captured two Bulgarian women.

An hour and a half later, other quick-witted policemen on the beat in Valletta chased a man who had just stolen a wallet full of cash from a van, also catching him.

Investigations are under way.

In the meantime, the police are still investigating the theft of a considerable amount of cash and cheques stolen from a Busy Bee Confectionary employee on Thursday.
