Birgu, a place in history

Achille Ferris primary school in Msida recently organised the second educational excursion for parents. Despite the threatening morning rain, the excursion took the many parents who attended on a culural outing.

The first stop was Vittoriosa local council, where they were greeted by Anton Attard, who gave them a detailed account of the city's history and also suggested sites to visit. The places visited included the Inquisitor's Palace and its little door leading to the court's room. This door is shaped in a way so that anyone entering it must bend down and so remain bowed down before the Inquisitor.

The visit to the Inquisitor's Palace was followed by another to the parish museum, where they were greeting by its curator. Their next stop was the Dominican Convent, where they were shown its treasures and the beautiful pedestal beneath the statue of St Dominic by one of the priests.

After having a little snack, they all met at the 1565 Museum. A small place with so much history - the Great Siege, the Ottoman Empire, the life of the Maltese during that period and the braveness of La Vallette are all part of the history of the place. The tour ended with a video presentation.

The outings are being organised to instil in parents a love for history and an awareness of Malta's cultural heritage. In turn this will be passed on to the children, ensuring a more culturally rich generation.
