Two men were yesterday charged with evading tax and duty on 9,000 packets of Marlboro cigarettes found in the booth of a car by the police during a search on Wednesday.

Francis Formosa, 33, of St Paul's Bay and Anthony Galea, 40, of Qormi pleaded not guilty to evading Lm7,893 in excise duty, Lm1,962 in value added tax and Lm756 in levy on Lm2,250 worth of cigarettes.

During the search, the police seized 18 boxes, each containing 50 cartons amounting to a total of 180,000 cigarettes.

Formosa and Galea, who were also charged with breaching previous court judgments and relapsing, were granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm5,000 each.

Police Inspector Bernard Zarb prosecuted.

Dr Joseph Giglio and Dr Robert Abela appeared for the defendants.
