The Malta Maritime Authority is hosting a group of students from the World Maritime University of Malmo, Sweden, for a field trip to the island.
The 18 students, hailing from countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, occupy senior shipping-related posts in their administration and are reading for a Master's degree in Port Management.
The students are in Malta for a week of familiarisation visits to various maritime institutions including the Ports Directorate of the MMA, the Malta Freeport, the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean and Sea Malta and site visits to the Grand Harbour and Cirkewwa.
In a brief welcoming address, Transport and Communications Minister Censu Galea reiterated Malta's commitment to share its facilities and considerable experience in maritime matters with the rest of the maritime community.
Set up in 1983 by the International Maritime Organisation, the WMU is the foremost institution for high-level maritime education and research.
Over the years seven Maltese graduates, five of whom are still in the employ of the Malta Maritime Authority, have successfully completed WMU post-graduate courses on a regular basis.
Malta also provides WMU with a number of visiting lecturers in various disciplines.
