The Astronomical Society of Malta is holding a public observing session at the Mall Gardens, in Floriana near the Independence Monument today from 6.30 p.m. onwards.
The society said that of special interest were the giant planets Saturn and, later in the evening, Jupiter.
The ringed planet, Saturn is high in the sky as twilight ends. The planet's ring system is tilted close to maximum, rendering striking views of the ring system.
This evening a first quarter moon presents an impressive sight through a telescope showing craters and mountain regions, the society said.
Members of the society will set up telescopes for use by the public, weather permitting.
In the beginning of March, the Astronomical Society will again be holding a basic course in astronomy to introduce the subject to anyone wishing to know more about the universe.
The course consists of five lectures and two observing sessions beginning on Monday at The German-Maltese Circle, Valletta at 6.30 p.m. with a talk - An Introduction to Astronomy.
