The sickness benefits question

The information carried under the heading "Sickness benefit abusers to be taken to court" (February 17) is a most alarming one. It gives a bad picture of the morality prevailing in many local quarters and with the consciences of many of our countrymen.

The information carried under the heading "Sickness benefit abusers to be taken to court" (February 17) is a most alarming one. It gives a bad picture of the morality prevailing in many local quarters and with the consciences of many of our countrymen. As a priest, it touches me very deeply!

The whole affair is a serious matter of morality, the reason being that it is evident many of our fellow citizens are not feeling the pangs of conscience when they repeatedly commit abuse as those decried.

Whether it is the abusing employees themselves or those one way or other aiding them in their misconduct, it is clear that many have lost sight of God and of conscience.

We are in the domain of honesty and morality, claiming money to which we have absolutely no right. Perhaps, more than the government, we, Church people, should play our part. If necessary, particularly now were are in Lent, also by opening illuminating campaigns which would cast the right light on duties towards state and society.

In my opinion, Minister Lawrence Gonzi deserves the full backing of all honest citizens in the question, no matter the colour of the party attracting us! And not only the backing of private citizens but also that of such organisations as the unions concerned. It is not right that these defend defrauders, to the detriment of the country and the very character of the defrauders themselves!

The information concluded by touching the point of the "boarding out" system, noting that Dr Gonzi has said that this system "was also being analysed since abuse was also possible in this sector". I am afraid it is a question of reality rather than possibility! Dr Gonzi will allow me to note that here, provided he really wants to do a good job, he should keep a very sharp look-out on the interference of fellow politicians and people surrounding them. I am sure he understands me!
