The Regional Projects Committee for Gozo has unanimously approved the Gozo Ministry's selection of infrastructural projects and measures for the development of human resources to be funded under the structural funds.

They include the setting up of a training hotel in Qala, a decompression chamber at the Gozo General Hospital, the creation of artificial dive sites in Gozo and the reconstruction of roads in Gozo.

The functions of the committee, which has just held its first meeting, are to select projects to be co-financed by the EU and see to their implementation.

The committee is made up of representatives of the local councils in Gozo, the Gozo Business Chamber, the Gozo Tourism Association, operators in the Gozo crafts industry, the Gozo University Group, Gozitan cooperatives in the agricultural and fisheries sector, non-governmental organisations in Gozo along with the Ministry for Gozo, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Malta Transport Authority, Malta Enterprise, the Water Services Corporation, Enemalta, Maltacom, the Malta Maritime Authority, the Employment and Training Corporation, Gozo Channel and trade unions.

The committee is responsible for the selection and prioritisation of all projects in Gozo to be funded under the EU structural funds (8.5 million).

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said that although the commmittee had just been officially set up, the ministry had long been working together with Gozitan organisations to identify the island's particular needs.
