The working time directive opt-out clause and the Public Service Act White Paper were two of the subjects discussed at a meeting between Labour candidate for the European parliament, economist Joseph Muscat, and a General Workers' Union delegation consisting of general secretary Tony Zarb and president Salvu Sammut.
During the meeting, Mr Muscat expressed his intention to work in order to have Maltese and Gozitan workers retain their right to choose the amount of overtime or part-time hours they want to work.
The current movement within the European Union is to do away with the opt-out clause that allows workers to allow employers to keep them for more than eight hours' weekly overtime.
Mr Zarb and Mr Sammut said the GWU was looking closely at this issue.
