Worker slightly injured as crane keels over

A worker was slightly hurt yesterday when a crane keeled over during construction works in Naxxar.

He was injured when he jumped off a low wall in his rushed attempt to avoid the falling crane, the police said.

The police said they went on site, in Triq in-Nutar, at about 3.15 p.m. and found the crane had tilted to a 45-degree angle and was leaning against a tower crane.

They evacuated the area, including residents in some surrounding houses, and called in civil protection, Enemalta and health and safety personnel.

Their action was the right one. The crane later overturned onto a building still under construction.

The police said it appeared that the crane first leaned over when part of the ground it was standing on caved in.

Duty Magistrate Joe Cassar ordered an on-site inquiry to establish the cause of the accident.
