Who appoints the president of the Commission?

The president as well as the two vice-presidents of the European Commission are appointed by a common agreement by the governments of the member states. At present the president of the Commissioner is Romano Prodi, from Italy. The two vice-presidents are Neil Kinnock (UK) and Loyal de Palacio (Spain). The Prodi Commission will end its five-year term in October 2004.
