The Nazzareno Vassallo Award for 2003 was awarded to Gemma Zammit, an ex-teacher from Nadur.

Nominated by Nadur local council, Ms Zammit was entrusted with Nadur's day centre for the elderly in 2001. From that day on, Ms Zammit started working to create a new lease of life in the elderly. She took the opportunity to encourage the elderly to participate in the Nadur carnival and to keep active throughout the year.

A whole programme of activities spanning the entire year was scheduled for the elderly that includes dancing, physical exercises, singing, acting, costume design and sewing.

The award recognises individuals or organisations who have distinguished themselves in initiatives that improve the well-being of older persons.

The presentation ceremony was held at The Palace, in Valletta.
