Egyptair hijack drama to be filmed

The Producer's Creative Partnership (PCP), a company based at Mediterranean Film Studios, is one of the producers of Flight to Oblivion, the working title of a film scheduled for filming partly in Malta this summer.

The film is based on the true story of the Egyptair hijack which took place in Malta in 1985.

The event has gone down as the "bloodiest hijack-rescue in the history of aviation". A total of 58 passengers died as a result of smoke inhalation when high explosives were placed under the passenger cabin. Some of the bodies were incinerated beyond recognition.

Part of the film's story has been fictionalised for dramatic purposes but the fundamental truths were untouched.

The film will be directed by Canadian but Maltese-born director Mario Azzopardi who last year was nominated by the Directors Guild of Canada for the Craft Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Direction" in the feature film category.

Filming should also take place in Ontario, Canada, in co-production with Whizbang Films. Actors taking part have not yet been officially announced, but some international names are already under negotiation.

Part of the film's cost will be financed locally. The exact dates of filming are still not officially set, since the project is still in development.
