On February 4, FOI council member and Environment Committee chairman Godwin C. Micallef attended a meeting with Architect Anthony Abela, director of the Drainage Department within the Water Services Corporation, to discuss procedures to be adopted by the department on the issue of permits on sewage discharge according to Legal Notice 139 - Environment Protection (Sewage Discharge Control) Regulations 1993 as amended.

Bernadette Mallia and Tony Gigli, from the Drainage Department's Discharge Monitoring Unit, were also present.

Mr Abela confirmed that the department is going to abide by the agreement reached with the FOI in October 2000 on the Voluntary Undertaking for Liquid Effluent Discharge Permits. This undertaking will make it easier for any firm to comply with the regulations.

FOI members with any queries may contact the FOI Secretariat.
