The government, the Federation of Industry and the Federation of Building Contractors have agreed to postpone a controversial increase in tipping fees.

The new fee for the disposal of rubble at sites, administered by WasteServ, will be introduced on March 29 instead of February 16.

Landfill tipping fees for construction and demolition waste will increase to 73c per tonne, from the current 39c per tonne.

The agreement was reached at a meeting on Thursday between the Minister for Resources and the Infrastructure, Ninu Zammit and representatives of the two federations.

The rate of 73c per tonne, including VAT, will be charged for the disposal of rubble at the facilities administered by WasteServ.
