As was expected by the absolute majority of the Maltese public, Eddie Fenech Adami initiated the process to step down as leader of the Nationalist Party.

Indeed, it can be said that even during the electoral campaign last year the popular belief was that Dr Fenech Adami would lead Malta into the EU on May 1 and then resign as prime minister.

Lately, the Labour Party has found it fashionable to call for Dr Fenech Adami's resignation over any little matter. We all remember how just a few weeks ago Anglu Farrugia called on Dr Fenech Adami to resign.

We all know that in a matter of a month Alfred Sant has made several calls for Dr Fenech Adami to resign.

However, ever since the media mentioned the date of February 7, Dr Sant has taken his case a step further. It is disgusting to see Super One portraying Dr Fenech Adami as a leader leaving in disgrace when in fact it is the opposite.

Dr Sant should be ashamed of himself that while a fellow Socialist, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, sent Dr Fenech Adami his good wishes, Dr Sant could not forget political differences even at this late stage and continued with his mud-throwing campaign.

Dr Fenech Adami will forever be remembered as one of Malta's greatest leaders, a man who had a vision and who used all his energy to make this vision a reality.

Thanks to Dr Fenech Adami Malta is a free and totally democratic country, with a modern infrastructure, a healthy private sector and a country that has the respect of European countries. Thank you Eddie and may you enjoy your retirement to the fullest!
