Street cleaning
I refer to the letter by Saviour Caruana regarding street cleaning (January 27).
First of all Mr Caruana does not realise that not everybody is fit enough to be able to clean the pavement and half the street. I am thinking of frail old people and people with disability. Furthermore, does he really think that people can afford to spend 24 hours a day guarding against the numerous litter bugs who live in Malta to make sure there is no litter in their area, just in case a traffic warden comes along and dishes out a fine? What about neighbours who do not get along very well and start trying to shift rubbish onto each other's patch?
I think that the solution lies in educating the public about littering and in the authorities carrying out their duties in keeping the streets clean. That is one of the reasons why we pay taxes. The wardens should be empowered to issue fines to people who are caught littering the streets, especially the rubbish collectors who have a habit of leaving quite a lot of the rubbish they are supposed to collect strewn behind them all along the streets.
Finally, I get the impression that Mr Caruana does not realise that to keep pavements clear of snow all that one needs is to throw rock salt or grit and has nothing to do with cleanliness but all to do with making the pavement less slippery.
