Skate park

As secretary of the BMX Association I would like to inform Darren Galea (February 3) and all Maltese skateboarders that a skate park does exist in Malta.

It forms part of the BMX track in Pembroke and is frequented by a large number of BMX riders as well as a few skateboarders and rollerbladers.

Events at the BMX track are regularly held and cater for skateboarders and rollerbladers, apart from the obvious BMX riders.

Invariably, participation from both skaters and inliners at these events is very poor.

I agree that it is a pity that there are not as many skate parks in Malta as there are in America but if one stops to think for a minute one will realise that America is much bigger than Malta, therefore there is more of a demand, hence more skate parks.

We are currently trying (donations permitting) to refurbish and upgrade the facilities at the track to enable us to cater for larger and more professional ramps.

But I would like to stress that all this is done thanks to our sponsors and through the sheer hard work of a very small group of volunteers.

I would like to invite Mr Galea, skateboarders and any member of the public for a visit at the BMX track in Pembroke to see for themselves.
