One of 19 people facing drug conspiracy charges was yesterday fined Lm50 for contempt of court.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera fined Juma Said Karfoosh, 35, of Hamrun after he interrupted the court sitting claiming he wanted to leave the courtroom once his lawyer was not present.

Although cautioned by the magistrate, Karfoosh again interrupted until the magistrate fined him and later converted the Lm50 fine to 10 days imprisonment.

This happened during the compilation of evidence against the 19 people who are charged with conspiring to traffic in cocaine and cannabis and to commit a crime on and before May 30, 2002.

The case continues.
