Joe Borg's nomination as Malta's first European Commissioner will be discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami and European Commission president Romano Prodi in Brussels tomorrow.

Prof. Prodi is set to finalise the list of prospective commissioners by the end of the month.

The new commissioners will stay in office until the end of the current commission's term in October but are then expected to be confirmed for a further five years to serve in the new commission of the enlarged Union.

The prime minister is also expected to hold a meeting with Michel Barnier, Commissioner responsible for regional policy and institutional reform.

On Thursday, Dr Fenech Adami will also be addressing the European People's Party congress in the European Parliament.

More than 700 delegates, including 13 European prime ministers and deputy prime ministers, along with leaders of member parties and European Commissioners will participate in the two-day EPP congress. The congress will focus on the preparations for the European elections scheduled for mid-June.
