Zammit wins Ta' Qali Supersprint Triathlon

Few dared to brave the cold but windless conditions and take part in the Supersprint Triathlon which the Malta Triathlon Association (MTA) organised at Ta' Qali on Sunday.

Mark Zammit topped the first 'supersprint' of the day in a time of 12:52 minutes. A handicap was introduced for the next race, with triathletes setting off at the Malta FA's indoor pool according to their finishing times from the previous race.

This time it was Mark Bugeja who won the sprint, having improved his result over the first race by almost a minute. With adjusted times, however, it was Zammit who was declared overall winner on combined timings.

The next Supersprint Triathlon is planned for Tuesday, February 10 at Marsascala. The event will be held on the short distances of 200m swim, at the Razzett tal-Hbiberija indoor pool, a 4km cycle and a 1km run.

Sportivi Nazzjonali contest

In a short statement, the MTA said that for the second consecutive year, triathlon figured highly in the preferences of sports journalists when they came to vote for the Sportivi Nazzjonali 2003 contest.

Maria Mifsud Bonnici, 2002 Sportswoman of the Year, was again shortlisted for the same honour this year.

The MTA noted that in a year which was dominated by the Games of the Small States of Europe, it was inevitable that the top three places would go to GSSE medal winners.

Mifsud Bonnici deserved to be among the finalists since not only did she win all local races, including the national championships, but she also finished second in the Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe.

On the international front, Mifsud Bonnici won the Cyprus International Triathlon and was second in another race in England.
