Environmental NGO Nature Trust believes that the recently appointed Environmental Commission within the Maltese Church would be able to give useful advice to the Church authorities about current environmental issues.

Given the Church's strong social role, environmental awareness was expected to increase considerably, NT said.

The Church's stand on various environmental issues might help to tilt the balance in favour of an abused Maltese environment, up to now left for grabs through widespread insensitivity, neglect or complacency. The Church was also encouraged to continue to take strong stands in controversial issues, as was the case of the Rabat golf course, in favour of nature protection, NT added.
