The Department of Primary Education within the Faculty of Education will hold a three-day workshop for both primary trainees and practising primary school teachers which would be practical and relevant to their needs as teachers of art.

The workshop, "Art in Primary Education", is designed for teachers who are interested in learning more about ways with art education. The programme will involve students and teachers in developing their experience in two-dimensional art processes, including drawing, painting, printing, textiles, and three dimensional art processes including ceramics, sculpture and construction.

All three days will be predominantly practical but there will also be a strong critical dimension offering insights into progression in the art curriculum, using artists' work, art's role across the whole primary curriculum, in recording and assessment, and in debate around the developing art curriculum in Malta.

Elaine Benbow, an experienced primary art teacher, university lecturer, teacher adviser, Ofsted inspector and senior specialist arts teacher, has been invited to lecture on the course while Steve Blundell is an experienced InSET provider, practising artist and writer.

The workshop is to be held at the Creative and Expressive Arts Studio between April 12 and 14 from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

Teachers, activity teachers and student teachers in the Primary Education track are encouraged to attend. To register, or for more information about this workshop, please contact the workshop co-ordinator by e-mail isabelle.gatt@um.edu.mt. Deadline for registration is February 13.
