Malta's EU treaty 'must be renegotiated'

Foreign Minister Joe Borg was the least likely person to change Malta's treaty with the European Union, the Front Maltin Inqumu said yesterday.

It said Dr Borg had the "bad treaty" on his conscience to a greater extent than any other person in the Maltese parliament.

It also hit out at the Prime Minister's personal assistant, saying he was being nominated to become Malta's permanent representative even though he had never contested an election.

The organisation said it believes a Maltese commissioner should only be sent to Brussels if the EU agreed to renegotiate the island's treaty with it.

It said members of the European parliament should obtain a declaration from the presidents of the European parliament and of the European Commission that they would accept to start negotiations to ensure that the treaty with Malta was beneficial to the country. They should do this before they accepted the MEPs' "salaries and perks".
