Lm500,000 allocated in road works scheme

The government has so far allocated a fund of Lm500,000, which would allow the Malta Transport Authority to enter into road agreements with a total of 20 local councils, Transport Minister Censu Galea said yesterday.

In line with the agreement, local councils are authorised to carry out works on roads that currently fall under the central government's responsibility.

A number of councils are now in a position to carry out Lm75,000 worth of road works within their locality. They will be able to start works on such roads immediately and be reimbursed Lm25,000 per year over a period of three years for their expenditure.

Mr Galea yesterday toured road works in Kirkop, which fall under the agreement in question. The ongoing works cost Lm75,000.

Work is also ongoing to install services for a number of entities to ensure that the roads are not dug up in the near future.
