The government was expected to launch consultations with the social partners over pension reforms at the end of the month, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

Speaking at a party activity in Mellieha, Dr Gonzi said the government was committed to ensuring that pensions would remain guaranteed for future generations.

He stressed that the aim of pension reform was to strengthen the pension system in the country, not to dismantle it.

He criticised the Labour Party and the General Workers' Union, accusing them of launching negative campaigns aimed at discouraging people.

Dr Gonzi also criticised the MLP and the GWU for calling on the people to take to the streets.
