Horace Mercieca, director of education, was awarded the Gieh il-Qala award by the Qala council.

Mayor Paul Buttigieg presented Mr Mercieca with a memento to mark the occasion during a ceremony recently held at Qala primary school.

Mr Mercieca was president of the Anton Buttigieg Primary School for three years and an active member of the Legion of Mary. A player with St Joseph FC, he eventually became coach. He has also been actively involved in a number of religious, education and sports groups.

During the ceremony the mayor spoke highly of Mr Mercieca's dedication, respect and integrity, three qualities which led the board to award him the prestigious honour.

The ceremony was also attended by archpriest Fr Carmelo Refalo, members of the local clergy and members of social, sports, cultural and political societies.

Surrounded by his relatives, Mr Mercieca thanked the resident of Qala for their support. He added that although he has retired he will continue to work among them.
