Minister Giovanna Debono recently addressed the fifth annual general meeting of the Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) held at Calypso Hotel, Marsalforn.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), the Gozo Business Chamber and members of various associations.

This opening address GTA chairman, Mario Loporto, called on collaboration in the Gozitan tourism sector, especially at a time of growing competition.

GTA secretary, Joe Muscat, read his annual report, which referred to various meetings and initiatives taken by the GTA as well as problems of accessibility to the island. He said that the GTA was now officially recognised and that Gozo is now seen as a distinct destination from Malta.

The financial report was then read by treasurer Paul Scicluna.

MTA representative Joe Tanti delivered a presentation on the courses offered by the authority with the aim of introducing them in Gozo.

Elections for the new GTA council were followed by an address by Minister Debono, who expressed her satisfaction that the GTA is now recognised officially on a national level and that its aim of promoting Gozo as a separate destination has now been achieved.

She referred to the projects of a hotel school in Qala, the decompression chamber for divers and the building of arterial roads leading to tourist resorts. These projects, which were proposed by the GTA and listed in the Gozo Special Needs Assessment Study, are being funded by the EU, she said.
