The General Workers' Union said that after the government had announced that Air Malta would be selling its shares in Azzurra Air, senior airline officials informed the union's maritime and aviation section that the national airline would be registering losses amounting to Lm20 million and that there would be the need for restructuring.
The union said that in such a situation Air Malta employees were concerned and were asking what was happening with the airline. They feared that under the pretext of restructuring, they would start experiencing an erosion of their rights, the GWU said.
The union said the workers' concern increased following comments by IT and Investment Minister Austin Gatt that workers employed with Air Malta in 1987 were in excess of the airline's requirements.
