Alex Borg's hopes of landing a place in the final stages of the Embassy World Championships came to an end yesterday when the Maltese player was beaten by Pete Roscoe 5-2 in the third round of the qualifying stage.
The Maltese champion, who on Tuesday defeated Fraser Patrick 5-3, failed to keep up the pace with his opponent in the first part of the match as he trailed 3-1 at the interval.
Borg gave himself a lifeline by winning the fifth frame, but the English cueist won the next two frames to wrap up victory.
For Borg, the qualifying tournament in Wales also provided him with a good opportunity to pile up more ranking points for the Challenge Tour.
Borg, currently joint 27th on the 128-man list, needs to finish in the top 16 to secure participation in next season's Main Tour.
