The Malta migration website has published statistics relating to Maltese honoured in Australia, revealing that the achievements of 238 have been recognised since 1975.
The highest award given to Maltese was Membership of the Order of Australia (AM). Nine people achieved this distinction. Another 26 received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
Of the other distinctions, the most common was the National Medal (139) followed by the Australian Sports Medal (31). Other achievements include the bravery medal, sports medal, police medal, fire service medal and the Order of the British Empire.
The Order of Australia was established in 1975. Appointments to the Order may be as Companion, Officer, or Member. There is also a medal of the Order called the Medal of the Order of Australia. The migration website said it was a matter of considerable pride that Maltese abroad had managed to achieve well beyond expectation and out of proportion to their numbers relative to the population at large.
Further information about Maltese migrants and migration may be found in the website organised by the Maltese Migration Museum Committee.
