Bank of Valletta has sponsored the ongoing restoration of St Paul's Shipwreck Chapel, in St Paul's Bay.

The chapel's curator, Fr Michael Agius, said the chapel was recently declared a heritage monument.

It was originally built in 1621 by Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt to serve as a landmark to commemorate the shipwreck of St Paul, who introduced the Maltese people to Christianity.

The chapel was almost completely destroyed in 1943 by enemy bombs but it was rebuilt in 1957 on Grandmaster Wignacourt's plans. The titular painting of St Paul, extensively damaged in the bombing, was also restored to its former glory.

Restoration works are currently underway on the chapel's structure.
