Marine cadets from the training ship Endurance of the Southwest Unit Bristol Filton recently joined the Malta GC Sea Cadet Unit, of the training ship St Paul, for a joint training exercise.

The British cadets, who were invited to Malta by Ltd Cdr (SCC) Lino Camilleri, were led by Sgt Marcus Claridge and Sgt Scot Stevens.

The Maltese cadets had often been invited to Bristol by Major G.M. Sidney, to join the boys from the Endurance. This is the first time the joint marine cadet training was held in Malta.

The unit, billeted at Ghajn Tuffieha, started out with their first phase of the task called Exercise Maltese Cross at Mizieb. In spite of a heavy downpour, the cadets carried on undaunted.

For the last phase of the exercise they had to speed the last mile up to Selmun.

The cadets had a surprise visit by British High Commissioner Vincent Fean who chatted with staff and cadets and watched their activities.

Mr Fean said he appreciated the international liaison between these two detachments and was highly impressed by the enthusiasm and effort the cadets put into working together.

The cadets visited the Armed Forces of Malta's maritime unit where they were introduced to a range of small arms that are not generally encountered by cadets.

They also toured the various patrol boats as well as visiting the AFM air squadron.
