The Match Officials' Commission within the Malta Volleyball Association recently held a one-day clinic for its registered referees.

This clinic, staged at the Cottonera Sports Complex, attracted the participation of the bulk of volleyball referees in Malta.

Other individuals who have an interest in volleyball refereeing also accepted the invitation to attend this refresher course.

The principal objective of this clinic was to help officials improve their overall performance by identifying recurring mistakes they were committing during matches.

The clinic was run by Nello Calleja, chairman of the Match Officials' Commission.

The initial part of the programme was an update on refereeing news and developments within the european confederation (CEV) and the international federation (FIVB).

Then, the participants received hints on how to improve their refereeing. Here, emphasis was laid on the personality of the official rather than on his/her officiating skills.

The remainder of the clinic was a discussion, mainly focusing on the problems encountered by most referees when officiating and the instructions and guidelines issued by both the CEV and FIVB on how to handle such difficulties.

The one-day course ended with a volleyball match between the referees and other participants.
