I refer to an anonymous note I received over the Christmas period attached to a copy of an article entitled "Examples of thoughtlessness and egoism over reason and the common good" which I had written in my former capacity as president of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise.

The anonymous sender attached an empty carton of a product which my company happens to import into Malta and a type-written message stating "a case in point is your 20 per cent increase to the consumer as myself", referring to an increase in the selling price of the product in question.

I do not usually heed to anonymous letters but in this case I felt the need to react because it was clear that the author had not done his/her homework right and might have formed the wrong impression about my company's pricing policy.

Previously, the product in question was not subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) but was subsequently classified as vatable by the authorities concerned. This explains the increase in price.

Had the anonymous writer performed his research properly s/he would have known better but to direct his address to another recipient!
