While speculation about the appointment of Malta's EU Commissioner is rife, former ambassador John Vassallo is also interested in the appointment, sources said yesterday.

It has been reported that those nominated for Commissioner include Foreign Minister Joe Borg, Finance Minister John Dalli and the head of the prime minister's secretariat, Richard Cachia Caruana.

Dr Vassallo, who in the 1990s served as Malta's representative in Brussels, is known to be keen on being appointed Commissioner.

Recently a delegation from the American company General Electric was in Malta with Dr Vassallo to lobby for his appointment in Brussels. He is known to have held a senior position with the company for several years.

It is understood that the GE delegation met top government officials in connection with Dr Vassallo's appointment.
