Appreciation - Marjorie Hughes

by Fr Anthony Cilia, SJ, St Aloysius College, Birkirkara

Over the past 20 years or so Mrs Marjorie Hughes became almost synonymous with the Sixth Form of St Aloysius' College.

During all these years she served faithfully the Sixth Form students and the members of the staff in the school library and in the secretary's office whenever the need arose. Her gentle manners, her attractive smile and her extremely kind hospitality made the students feel so much at ease with her that they immediately took her into their confidence.

She knew how to uplift a low spirit, how to encourage a faint heart and how to point to the silver lining behind every dark cloud. Her motherly instinct made her care for what the students needed and she was prompt to provide the help they asked for. An avid fan of Manchester United, she kept herself young and close to the students through her enthusiasm for English football.

In spite of a number of difficult situations in her own life Mrs Hughes always managed to keep her captivating smile and to involve herself cheerfully in various activities. Indeed, her sense of service went beyond her call of duty. She did not limit herself to the College Sixth Form, but also offered her voluntary service to Caritas on a regular basis. The need of others was her concern, so much so that even when she lay sick in bed in hospital, she sought to help the other patients in her ward in the best way she could.

Mrs Hughes will be remembered for all her kind deeds and for the joy she inspired in others. One lasting memory of hers the students will certainly retain is that of her dancing with several of them at the graduation dinner party last June. Who could have thought that was her last goodbye to them! Her absence will now be sorely felt by one and all.

May the Lord, whom she loved so dearly and for whom she worked incessantly, grant her the eternal reward she so much deserves. May He in his love and mercy console her two children, Denise and Jeffrey, and their families.
