Outlook Coop, which runs the HSBC-sponsored Scoops Project, has organised an interactive seminar for teacher-managers who are participating in this year's project.

The focus of this year's Teacher-Managers Seminar was to emphasise the qualities required of a good teacher-manager. Each Scoop must have one or more teacher-manager to assist the students with their co-operative.

The HSBC-sponsored Scoops Project has been running in state, Church and private schools for the past nine years. Scoops give students between the ages of 13 and 15 the opportunity to set up a co-operative in their school and sell their products and/or services. This year there are 27 schools participating in the Scoops project.

During the seminar, which was held at the House of Co-operatives in Valletta, Philip Zammit, M.Sc. (Anglia), a trainer specialising in Human -Resource Development, focused on two main issues - teamwork and communication. During the session the teacher-managers had the opportunity to get to know each other better, express their views related to the project and learn from each other.

The seminar was conducted using various formats including discussions, presentations, fun management games and sharing of ideas. Throughout the event Mr Zammit made sure that the teacher-managers were always involved in what was happening, providing an extremely interesting and fun seminar for all those present.

Mr Zammit concluded the session by asking participants to give a presentation on what made a good teacher-manager. The teacher-managers came up with different points such as the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, be tolerant and have a non judgmental attitude, to know when to take initiative and when to intervene and be flexible. The issues raised made it clear that the seminar had helped the teacher-managers present understand their role better through interaction.

The Scoops Project is also sponsored by CCF and Keyword.

Knights of St Lazarus distribute donations to charitable institutions

The Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem recently held their annual service to celebrate the feast of their patron saint, St Lazarus.

Mass was celebrated by Fr Victor Soler at the chapel of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition, at Fatima House, in Sliema, courtesy of the Mother Superior. During the Mass, an offering for prayers was said for the repose of the souls of the deceased members of the order. The names of the deceased members were read by Chev. John N. Vassallo.

After the ceremony, a reception was held at Palazzo Capua. Following a short speech delivered by the Grand Prior, Marquis Chevalier Anthony Zammit of Tiana, assisted by his wife, chancellor of the Grand Priory, the Marquesa Bibiana of Tiana, donations were presented to the Sisters of Fatima House and the Sisters of Mother Theresa. A further donation is being offered to the Sisters of Mother of St Benedict in Mdina.

Earlier this year, a generous donation was given to Fr George Grima of Gozo, to help in his missionary work with lepers in Ethiopia.

St Andrew's Night dinner

The annual St Andrew's Night dinner hosted by the St Andrew Society (Malta) was recently held at the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel.

After a welcome drink the company took their places and the night's proceedings got under way with the top table being piped in by WO M. Farrugia, comprising society president Mrs Helen MacLachlan and her husband Duncan, Deputy British High Commissioner John Hillman, and Mrs Hillman, the Australian High Commissioner Richard Palk, accompanied by Mrs Palk, society patron Professor J.J. Cremona and Rev. David Morris.

Mrs MacLachlan then welcomed those present and while tracing Scotland's sporting achievements in recent months, gave credit to England on their recent Rugby World Cup victory over Australia.

After Rev. Morris said the Selkirk Grace, the company then sat down to a sumptuous meal beautifully prepared and served by the Corinthia staff.

The Great Chieftain was piped in by WO Farrugia and the Quaich and Ballantine's Scotch Whisky, supplied for the evening by Messrs Wands Ltd, was carried by Doug McQueen.

John Lejman addressed the haggis with his usual aplomb but his daughter's presence did seem to slightly faze "the Rustic, haggis fed".

The meal, washed down with fine wines courtesy of Emmanuel Delicata, came to an end with coffee and petit fours and a Drambuie, also supplied by Wands.

The toasts began with Mr Hillman toasting the President of Malta, Professor Cremona the Queen, and Mr Hillman toasting Scotland and reading out the message sent to the society by Jack McConnell, First Minister of Scotland, who wished all expatriate Scots well in an ever growing global environment and highlighting Scotland's role within an established UK and an expanding Europe.

The guests were toasted amiably by Mr M. Hollingsworth and the Rev. P. Wolfendon stole the evening with his adroit and witty reply. Rev. Wolfendon never missed a trick and nearly got Mr Lejman in the singing of Swing Low Sweet Chariot, England's rugby anthem.

Mrs MacLachlan then gave a vote of thanks all round, singling out the speakers and the sponsors Messrs Wands Ltd, Emmanuel Delicata and Corinthia, and gave the evening over to dance including Scottish country dancing led by the troupe to the music of Jim Poucher.

The society's next major function will be the annual Burns Supper which will be held on January 23 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Sliema.
