On the initiative of Qala council, pupils of President Anton Buttigieg Primary School recently cleaned up Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay, as part of the yearly Clean up the World campaign.
The aim was to provide the children with an interesting and educational experience, which would make them aware of the importance of a clean environment.
Before the clean-up started, mayor Paul Buttigieg stressed the importance of maintaining local beaches, especially that of Hondoq ir-Rummien. He said that the public has been benefiting from such projects, in which schoolchildren have been participating, and which have been supported by the local council.
Past projects included those of Il-Gebla l-Wieqfa, which has been rehabilitated and made more accessible, the playing field near Ta' Cassia, which had been developed from a dump, and the leisure park, where the children were also involved in its clean-up.
The mayor added that the time has come for Qala to introduce waste separation, and stressed that children, with the help of their parents, should be involved in this important environmental measure.
Antoine Portelli, a diver employed with one of the diving centres in Gozo, also addressed the children on the importance of keeping beaches clean, especially of plastic and glass bottles.
