San Anton School is taking part in a Council of Europe project. Professor Giuseppe De Cato, director of the Istituzione d'Istruzione Scuola Superiore Domenico Fioritto at San Nicandro in Puglia, Italy, was in Malta recently to meet Louis Pisani, principal of San Anton School, and staff members.

San Anton School will take part in the project that the Italian school is directing about the teaching of 20th century European history. The project will involve the collection of pedagogical and didactic material, which will then be presented to the Council of Europe. Professor De Cato was accompanied by his assistant, Professor De Filippis.

The Council of Europe is creating several educational activities, which help emphasise the European cultural identity. It recently elaborated three projects in this are: 'Educating for democratic citizenship', 'Linguistic policies for a multicultural and multilingual Europe' and 'The understanding and teaching of 20th century European History'.

The 20th session of the permanent conference of the Ministers of Education, held in Cracow, Poland, in 2000, approved the final projects, which were ultimately defined by the final conference held in Bonn in 2002.

The main objective of the project is to provide teaching material, which will prove a practical guide to history teachers in secondary schools. Other meetings about the project, which is being undertaken under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Education, will be held in Italy.
