The GRTU, Association of Retailers and Traders said yesterday that although VAT would be raised to 18 per cent on January 1 it was not possible for shop owners to change all their prices by that time.

Customers were therefore advised that from January 1 they may find notices in shops telling them that price tags may not reflect the prices they would actually be charged.

The GRTU said it was advising shop owners that if they did not manage to change all their price tags, they should display a notice saying prices were being displayed in two colours, specifying the colour for the adjusted prices and that for the old prices.

Old prices would be adjusted at the cash point when the three percentage point increase would be charged.
