The Labour Party's spokesman for social solidarity, Marie Louise Coleiro, has expressed her satisfaction at the appointment of the first Commissioner for Children, Sonia Camilleri.

Ms Coleiro appealed to the government to provide all the necessary facilities so that the office could work effectively.

The children's sector in Malta required a push forward as soon as possible, she added, listing as a priority the need to identify the problems children were facing.

A national policy needed to be developed in a collective effort between child-related associations to ensure that any obstacles were surmounted and to improve children's lives, Ms Coleiro said.
