As expected, Alternattiva Demokratika has once again come out with guns blazing, killing the baby before it is born.
It would have made more sense had they opted to sustain a second link between the islands.
Their concern borders on the ridiculous. No one wants a fully fledged airport on Gozo but the island cannot go forward without an airlink in this day and age and a helicopter service is proving to be too expensive to run, hence the extension of the present airstrip to accommodate light aircraft is deemed necessary.
Most of the land in question is not being utilised, not being farmed; on the contrary, most of it is serving as an unauthorised rubbish dump.
Just by having a few expressing opposition to the project, who may have different political motives, does not mean that all Gozo is against the said airstrip extension.
The third option being expressed - that of having the service operated by sea planes - should be carefully studied and encouraged. Such a service is widely used in many countries, particularly in the Caribbean.
