Alternattiva Demokratika expressed concern over an advert appearing in several Maltese newspapers in which the government is inviting persons or organisations interested in carrying out a scheduled air service between Malta and Gozo to submit proposals to the Ministry for Transport and Communications.
AD called on the government to specify whether expressions of interest for fixed wing aircraft are being considered. It reiterated strong opposition to the idea of an airport in Gozo.
"An airport in Gozo would be unsustainable and unnecessary. The government should not forget the opposition shown by Gozitans when an airport was proposed at Ta' Lambert before the 1996 election," AD spokesman Mark Causon said.
"Gozo is an ideal tourist destination because it is still relatively unspoilt. Building an airport would mean the destruction of another big chunk of Gozitan countryside".
